You’ve heard all the buzz from your neighbors and friends about geothermal heating and cooling. They may even own one of those clean, energy-efficient systems. Aside from savings of up to 70% on their heating & cooling bill; the geothermal tax credit is a welcome boon.

Installing an energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system qualifies Idaho Falls residents for the new tax credit under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill of 2009. Now is the time to install one of these Energy Star rated systems, as the $2,000 cap was removed allowing homeowners to capitalize on the entire 30% tax credit available to them. Commercial buildings are not left out with a credit of 10 percent of the total investment returned upon filing the proper paperwork.

To qualify, the system must be Energy Star compliant and installed between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2016. Units installed in 2008 are also eligible and are confined to the $2,000 cap. Commercial units must have been installed after Oct. 3, 2008.
