Leaking AC in Idaho Falls, ID

You notice your AC is leaking water. Is this something to be concerned about? Should you just wipe up the puddle and go on, or is this leaking a sign of trouble? Water leaking from your AC is a common occurrence. While it is not dangerous, it is a sign that there is a problem within the system that needs taken care of. Here are a few reasons why your AC could be leaking.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Your AC runs on refrigerant, which is what makes it cold. Just like the air conditioner in your vehicle, it requires a charge now and then to maintain adequate levels for efficient cooling. When the levels drop too low due to a leak somewhere in the system, the pressure goes down and the evaporator coil can freeze up. The water you see on the floor is the coil thawing out between cycles.

Dirty Air Filter

Air filters keep dust, dirt, and other debris from being sucked into the air handler. This filter collects these particles and should be changed monthly. When the filter collects too much dust, it restricts the airflow to the system, making it strain to pull in air. When this happens, the air around the evaporator coil gets super cold, causing it to freeze up.

Clogged Condensate Drain

The condensate drain is where moisture collected by the system is drained away. When dust and dirt collect on the inside of the system, they can stick to the sides of this drain until it creates a blockage. The moisture continues to collect, but since the drain is blocked, it leaks out onto the floor.

What to Do About It

When you notice your air conditioner leaking water, turn off the unit immediately and call for repair service. There is no imminent danger from water leaking, but to continue running the air conditioner in this state puts a strain on the system, making it work harder to do its job.
